Boundaries for DIY guidance, when to stop, and how professional review is represented. Last updated July 31, 2026.

RepairSmart provides general educational information and rough cost comparisons. It cannot inspect your home, identify hidden conditions, confirm a diagnosis, or determine what local building codes and permits require. When in doubt, stop and consult a qualified professional.
When to stop immediately
Do not continue if you cannot fully isolate electricity, gas, water, stored mechanical energy, heat, or pressure; if conditions differ from the guidance; or if you lack the required training, protective equipment, or tools. Leave the area and contact emergency services when there is immediate danger (fire, gas odor, flooding into electrical equipment, structural collapse risk, injury).
- Water near live electrical outlets, panels, or appliances
- Gas odor, pilot issues you cannot safely isolate, or unvented combustion concerns
- Open electrical service equipment or unknown multi-wire circuits
- High-tension garage springs, structural members, or roof work without fall protection and training
- Active leaks you cannot shut off at a known valve
High-risk and permit work
RepairSmart does not publish detailed DIY steps for repairs classified as high risk, and generally withholds DIY instructions for permit-required work. Those jobs are directed toward qualified professionals. Examples include electrical service/panel work, gas systems, structural components, high-tension springs, many roofing situations, and pressurized hot-water safety devices.

How “professionally reviewed” is defined
A page may state that guidance was reviewed by a qualified home-repair professional only when product data includes:
- A professional-review flag set to true,
- A non-empty reviewer name or credential string, and
- A valid ISO review date (
YYYY-MM-DD).
“Not reviewed” / AI-assisted means no such review is represented or implied. We will not fabricate reviewers, licenses, or dates to improve search rankings. Unreviewed content can still be useful for cost orientation and safety awareness, but it is not a professional sign-off on your job.
Your responsibility
- Verify shutoffs, personal protective equipment, and local code requirements before starting.
- Obtain permits and inspections when required.
- Treat cost numbers as estimates—not bids, insurance valuations, or financing advice.
- Read repair-specific hazard and “stop if” notes on each landing page and analysis.
